YWCA Renovation

This project included renovation of the pool area HVAC as well as a second-story addition to an existing building in Topeka, Kansas.  The HVAC renovation was mainly driven by operating cost savings.  The original design included steam boilers operating year round to provide steam for pool water heating and HVAC reheat needs. The boilers were converted to hot water to serve only HVAC heating needs with gas fired stand-alone heaters added for pool water heating.  The pool HVAC system was replaced with a Munters air handling unit consisting of direct expansion cooling, desiccant dehumidification wheel with gas fired regeneration.  The reheating needs were achieved by bypassing hot desiccant wheel air around the direct expansion post cooling coil.  The resulting lowering of interior humidity levels in the pool area was immediately embraced by the YWCA.  The second floor addition allowed for expanded office space and meeting rooms.  This area was conditioned with a roof mounted VAV air handling unit serving a medium pressure duct system feeding VAV terminal units with electric heat.

As part of the overall renovation, the electrical system was upgraded to support the new spaces, and a new fire alarm system installed.
