Kansas University Structural Biology Center
This 20,000 square-foot facility is located on the West Campus at Kansas University and consists of research laboratory space, office spaces, and NMR magnets.
The building includes acid resistive piping for the DWV system, RO water production and distribution, compressed air, condenser water distribution, laboratory fume hood ventilation and the associated make-up air, and general building HVAC. The laboratory fume hood ventilation is a central exhaust system which terminates in a heat recovery exhaust unit. The heat content of the exhaust air stream is transferred to the make-up air preheat position through a glycol loop heat recovery system. The cooling for the building is derived from a water-cooled chiller delivering chilled water to air handling units dedicated to each phase and interlocked with the heat recovery exhaust system. Heating for the building is derived from a pair of gas fired hot water boilers.
The electrical system for the facility is derived from the West Campus distribution system. The laboratory spaces are provided with dedicated 120/208 volt three phase panels to facilitate continuing equipment changes within the labs. All fluorescent fixtures are provided with solid state ballasts and T8 lamps.
