HISTORIC

The Great Overland Station

Union Pacific’s beautiful passenger station in North Topeka, on the State Register of Historic Places, is possibly the finest representation of railroad heritage in Kansas.  The station which opened to the public on January 27, 1927 was damaged by a fire in 1992.   It was the goal of Topeka Railroad Days, Inc., to restore the Union Pacific Station and transform it into a museum/activity center.

Phase 1, approximately $2.1 million dollars, involved the interior renovation of the West wing, the reconstruction of the “fire gutted” West Central wing and the restoration of the exterior of the entire building.   Phase 2, approximately $2.5 million dollars, involved the interior renovation of the Main Central waiting room, first and second floors of the East Central and East wing, and the development of the 11 acre site.   Stand on the restored brick platform and feel the power of the trains as they pass by the Station!
