SPECIAL LIGHTING

Washburn University Living Learning Center

Washburn University’s Living Learning Center is a three-building complex that includes a 400 bed Resident Hall, a two-story Common/ Meeting Building, and Stauffer Commons (a home-style Food Court).  Stauffer Commons is connected via an enclosed two-story bridge with the University’s Student Union.

The common spaces are designed with incandescent downlights controlled by motion sensors. The motion sensors are used to extend the life of the incandescent lamps. Corridors within the Residence Hall were fitted with fluorescent wall sconces and cove lighting.

The “Union Market” in Stauffer Commons is designed with incandescent downlights and architectural low voltage track lighting to create a festive atmosphere while complementing the food being displayed and served. Decorative halogen pendants are suspended at different elevations to maintain the architectural theme and to create more volume within the space. Color corrected metal halide downlights are used to supplement the architectural pendants. The design took into account that the space would have an abundance of daylighting that could be utilized from both the east and west aluminum storefront curtain wall systems.
