MIDDLE/JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS

Southwest Jr. High

This $7.5 million, 90,000 square-foot facility was constructed in Lawrence, Kansas for USD 497.  Connected to an elementary school, the two buildings share a physical plant located in the Junior High. Heating water is produced by redundant, gas-fired boilers and chilled water is produced by three air-cooled rotary chillers with indoor evaporators.  The gymnasium was provided with a constant volume unit while other areas are conditioned by variable air volume units.  The building is heated with an 'air wash' system which utilizes heating units serving a perimeter duct system to offset the exterior heat losses.  Locker rooms are provided with high ventilation rates for moisture control.

The electrical system is based on a 277/480 volt service with step-down transformers located in various locations to serve the 120/208 volt requirements.  The lighting system design is fluorescent fixtures equipped with energy efficient T8 lamps.   The gymnasium is illuminated with HID sources with multiple switching.  The auditorium was provided with a computerized theatrical dimming system. The emergency lighting and power system is served from an on-site gas-fired generator.
