Hoss and Brown gets more involved in community - Lawrence Women Build

Laura Blanchard is currently on the Steering Committee for the Lawrence Women Build Habitat for Humanity Project in Lawrence Kansas.  The goal for the Lawrence Women Build Project this year is to raise $65,000 and to build a home for a deserving mother and daughter that have long been members of this community.  The Daughter was tragically injured in an accident while in college and now has special needs.  Hoss & Brown Engineers is excited to be volunteering their time and will be providing many hours on the construction site with their families to assist on this project.

Meagan Kirchhoff passed the PE Exam in the State of California. Meagan is a Staff Engineer working in the Lenexa, Kansas office. She graduated from Kansas State University in 2008 with a Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Engineering. We congratulate Meagan on her accomplishment!

Historic Valentine Apartments Project Wins Another Award

Rau Construction Company has been awarded a "Project of the Year" award from the Kansas City Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America for their work on the renovation of the historic Valentine Apartments located in Kansas City, Missouri.  Hoss & Brown congratulates the team at Rau Construction on this great accomplishment!

Valentine Apartments Project Wins Award

The project team of Hoss & Brown Engineers, Stark Wilson Duncan Architects and McCormack Baron Salazar, Inc. has been awarded a Preserve Missouri Award by the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation for their work on The Valentine Apartments, located at 3724 Broadway Boulevard in Kansas City.  Originally designed in 1927, by Nelle E. Peters, the 11-story building was restored both inside and out to create commercial lease space and 65 apartment units with amenity areas.

The Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Park Receives Awards

The Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Park, located at Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, has recently been awarded a Silver Design Excellence Award by KC Home Design.  The park has also been awarded a Merit Award for Design by the Central States Region of the American Society of Landscape Architects.  The park serves as a living tribute to cancer survival; communicates a renewed sense of hope; and reestablishes the park’s presence as an iconic and memorable gateway to the Country Club Plaza District.

Hoss & Brown Engineers Awarded University of Kansas Renovation Project

The University of Kansas recently awarded the Renovation of Jayhawker Tower ‘D’ student resident hall on the KU main campus to Hoss & Brown Engineers.  The Hall is slated to have 75 Apartments which house up to 4 students per apartment.  Ground breaking is scheduled for Winter/Spring of 2010 with the building being occupied for the Fall of 2010 Semester.  Hoss & Brown Engineers’ architectural partner on the project is Slemmons and Associates of Topeka, KS

In Memory of Paul Hunt

With great sadness, Hoss & Brown Engineers announces the death of Paul W. Hunt. Paul had worked at HBE since 1992 in both the Topeka office then moving to the Lawrence office. He was part of our family and will be missed by many. Thank you for the support that everyone has shown over the past few months.

Funeral services for Paul William Hunt, 50, Lawrence, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Chanute. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. Thursday at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita, KS.
Mr. Hunt died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, MO.
He was born May 20, 1959, in Chanute, the son of Jack Warren and Dorothy Evelyn Hawton Hunt.
He graduated from Chanute High School and attended Kansas State University.
Mr. Hunt worked as a Senior Designer for 16 years for Hoss and Brown Engineers Inc. in Lawrence, KS.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chanute.
He was a big fan of the Kansas City Royals and the Chiefs, as well as the Kansas State Wildcats.
Survivors include his mother and two aunts.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel in Chanute.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the First Baptist Church of Chanute, in care of Penwell Gabel Gibson Chapel, 16 N. Forest, Chanute, KS 66720.

Hoss & Brown Has Fun with Go Karts!

The staff of Hoss & Brown recently went to Sadler's Indoor Racing in Olathe, Kansas for an office bonding experience with go karts! We divided up into two groups and competed for the best overall time. Each group raced twice and it came down to a showdown...Matt Turley vs Brandon Frey...Brandon is our office champ! Hoss & Brown Announces Promotions

Laura Blanchard and Neil Bartley have each been promoted to Principal. Mrs.Blanchard has worked for Hoss & Brown since 1998. Mr. Bartley has worked for Hoss & Brown since 2005. They both graduated from Kansas State University's Architectural Engineering program.

Matt Murrell has been promoted to Associate. Mr. Murrell has worked for Hoss & Brown since 2002. He began as a Staff Engineer and became a Project Manager in January 2008. Matt is one of two Associates for the company. Congratulations!

Two H&B Engineers Pass LEED Exam!

Mike Van Duyne and Drew Whitehill, two Hoss & Brown engineers from our Lawrence, Kansas location, have both successfully completed the LEED exam! Mike Van Duyne graduated from Kansas State University in 2004 with a degree in Architectural Engineering and has been with Hoss & Brown since January 2005. Drew Whitehill is a new H&B employee who recently graduated from Kansas State University's Architectural Engineering Program. Congratulations to both of you on a job well done!

H&B Goes to Lawrence for KU vs. KSU Football Game!

Well, it's that time of year again! H&B staff and their families made the annual trip to the KU vs. KSU football game held in Lawrence, Kansas. It was a perfect day for football...tailgating and all! Although this game didn't end well for K-State fans, a good time was had by all!

Casey Steiner Gets His LEED Certification!

Casey Steiner, Associate, received his LEED Professional Accreditation this month when he passed the LEED Certification exam! Casey is one of three engineers within the Kansas City office to receive this accreditation.

Hoss & Brown Engineers Attend Trane Clinic

Matt Turley, Meagan Kirchhoff and Brandon Frey, Staff Engineers, are currently attending the 2008 Air Conditioning Clinic presented by Trane. This six week course provides an overview of the HVAC industry, with topics including an Introduction to HVAC Systems, HVAC System Controls, and Cooling & Heating Load Estimation. Upon completion of this course, our engineers will have a better understanding of HVAC equipment and systems.

August 2008 - Hoss & Brown Awarded Project at K-State University

Hoss & Brown has been selected to provide mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services for the renovation and addition to the Peters Recreation Complex on the campus of Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. This facility was built in 1981and needs to expand in order to accommodate the needs of students, clubs, and campus organizations. The proposed addition includes a running track, training studio, cardio and weight room, rock climbing wall, lounge, multi-purpose room, and an additional entrance. Renovations will take place throughout the current facility. This project is tentatively scheduled for completion by late Fall 2011.

July 2008 - Joel Meddings Celebrates 10th Anniversary!

Joel Meddings, one of two Senior Designers with Hoss & Brown Engineers, celebrated his 10th Anniversary with us on July 1st. Joel is involved in all levels of MEP design and construction administration. He has been an integral part of the Kansas City office since its opening. We congratulate Joel on this accomplishment and look forward to working with him for years to come!

July 2008 - Hoss & Brown Receives Community Service Award

Hoss & Brown has received a Community Service Award for work completed on the Lee's Summit Fire Station No.7 located in Lee's Summit, Missouri. This project was selected from thousands of applicants and was chosen for the impact it has made on the community. This 14,000 square-foot building is divided into five main components. There is a living quarters that accounts for 4,300 square feet, a 900 square-foot business office area, a 4,500 square-foot apparatus bay, a 1,200 square-foot classroom area, and a 3,100 square-foot training facility. Congratulations to WSKF Architects and Hoss & Brown Engineers!

June 2008 - Employees pass FE and PE Exams

Elias Pourladian passed his FE Exam and Jim Lord passed the PE Exam! Elias is a summer intern in the Kansas City office and he is currently studying Architectural Engineering at Kansas State University. Elias plans to graduate in December 2009 with a Master's Degree in Architectural Engineering. Elias has been actively working on several projects this summer, ranging from healthcare to high-rise residential buildings. While most of his work has been spent designing mechanical systems, Elias has also gained knowledge in the electrical and plumbing disciplines as well. Jim Lord is a Project Engineer working in the Lawrence, Kansas office. Jim graduated from the University of Kansas in 2003 with a Bachelor's Degree in Architectural Engineering. We congratulate Elias and Jim on their accomplishments!

May 2008 - Hoss & Brown Project Featured in Published Article

Hoeger House, a 14,320 square foot rehabilitation facility located in Olathe, Kansas, is one of several projects featured in the May/June 2008 issue of Design Cost Data Magazine. Design Cost Data is the cost estimating magazine for design and construction and has published a case study with a cost breakdown for the Hoeger House facility. Hoss & Brown Engineers worked with HMN Architects, Inc. to design this $2.4 million facility. Hoeger House is part of a large, developing, senior living and health care campus. This building features 17 private rooms, a common dining room and activity room, a physical therapy room, large kitchen, spa and hair salon.

April 2008 - Hoss & Brown Adds Project Manager to Team

Hoss & Brown Engineers, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of Paul Karr to our team! Paul Karr is a graduate of Kansas State University and has been hired as a Project Manager, overseeing the design and construction of QuikTrip stores nationwide. Paul is actively involved in the design and construction of other Hoss & Brown projects as well and we are pleased to welcome him to our team!

April 2008 - Hoss & Brown Awarded Bartle Hall Project

Hoss & Brown Engineers, in conjunction with the P1 Group, has received the Lighting Improvement Project at Bartle Hall. This Kansas City Convention Facility is located in the heart of Downtown Kansas City and offers 489,800 total square feet of usable space! We have been selected to design a new lighting system for the Exhibit Halls that will not only improve luminance but will also comply with the International Energy Code and decrease the energy usage by over 25%. This project is slated for completion by June 1, 2008.

March 2008 - Hoss & Brown Receives Award

Hoss & Brown, working in conjunction with Stark Wilson Duncan Architects, received the Missouri 2008 Preservation Honor Award for their work on The Oaks Apartments in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. This award was presented by Senator Bill Stouffer and Representative Bob Nance. The Preserve Missouri Awards recognize outstanding efforts and projects around the state and illustrates the diversity of historic preservation issues. Awards recognize a variety of projects including commercial and residential rehabilitation, landscape, archeology, and advocacy.

H&B Awarded Mechanical and Plumbing Design for Federal Reserve Condos

Hoss & Brown, in association with Townsend Inc., has been awarded the mechanical and plumbing design for the Federal Reserve Condos located in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri. This 21-story tower, with construction costs in excess of $50 million, will feature 155 luxury condominiums and two-story penthouse homes with fantastic views of the city! This historic site was constructed in the early 1900's and has housed the offices of Harry S. Truman and was once home to the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

February 2008 - Hoss & Brown Hires Summer '08 Intern

Elias Pourladian has accepted a summer intern position with Hoss & Brown Engineers.  Elias is pursuing a Master's Degree in Architectural Engineering from K-State Univeristy. Elias is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society, ASHRAE, and the Architectural Engineering Institute - just to name a few! Elias will begin his internship in June 2008.
